FAV45: Bouncy Lady (BlackCash & Theo Edit) by Pleasure b/w Why Can't People Be Colors Too? (BlackCash & Theo Edit) by The Whatnauts
CAT: GSC45010
LABEL: Galaxy Sound Company
Another portable fav funk 45 in this great series of funk, soul and party edits from the most reliable edit crew in the business, aka the you-best-cop-on-site label Galaxy Sound Company. With GSC45010, their 10th release, Black Cash & Theo deliver up two golden era hip-hop sample staples, Pleasure’s “Bouncy Lady” & The Whatnauts’ “Why Can’t People Be Colors Too?”
Both are revered for their tantalizing drum breaks which served as the foundation for dozens of classic records, but played in full are absolute floor-fillers for funk and soul DJs.
Side A's "Bouncy Lady" was originally released as a B-side to Pleasure's 1974 single "Midnight At The Oasis" from their debut jazz-funk LP "Dust Yourself Off" and was produced by jazz legend Wayne Henderson of The Crusaders. The intro break has been extended, and is said to be one of the all time classic hip hop funk breaks. Elements of this track were sampled on "Brand New Funk" by DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, "Word to the Mother (Land)" by Big Daddy Kane, and "Church" by De La Soul.
Side B's "Why Can't People B Colors Too?" rides the powerful message on The Whatnauts funky train. The track appeared on the band's final 1972 LP "Whatnauts On The Rocks". This is an R&B jam with another heavy break, as sampled by Q-Tip, Pete Rock, Diamond D, Dilla, and "Oh My God" by A Tribe Called Quest featuring Busta Rhymes.
This release is a sure-fire, immediate fav45 and are highly welcome in my bag as original copies of both records are cold chilling at Skull Snaps prices on ’Scogs. Blackcash & Theo give both sides a gentle edit for the selectors. BC&T's edit keeps the essential intro in tact to set it off right.
